BYD e3

2026-09-22 04:20:00

The BYD e3 is the first all-electric compact sedan under BYD Auto's e-series, officially launched on 24 October 2019. Built on BYD's dedicated e-Platform, the model serves as the sedan counterpart to the e2 and was retailed via the BYD e-Network sales channel. This created a distinct market positioning separate from the premium-oriented Dynasty Series, with the e-series focusing primarily on value-driven all-electric passenger cars. During its production run, the e3 was offered with two NEDC range options—305 km and 405 km—with post-incentive prices ranging between RM103,800 and RM119,800 for the 2019 model year. In 2021, BYD rolled out updated variants such as the Chuxing Edition and Lingchang Edition, adjusting official guide prices to RM131,800–RM155,800 to target the e-hailing and fleet mobility segments. No further updates were introduced after 2021, leading to its gradual phase-out from the passenger car market.

Design Language

Although not part of the Dynasty Series, the BYD e3 incorporates familiar "Dragon Face" design cues blended with the e-series' signature "Crystal Energy" styling theme. The front fascia features a large hexagonal dot-matrix grille accented with chrome inserts, flanked by sharp LED headlight clusters and L-shaped air intake garnishes to deliver a sporty aesthetic. Defined character lines on the bonnet further accentuate the car's aggressive stance.

Along the sides, the e3 sports a dual-waistline profile, with the upper crease running seamlessly from the front fender through to the taillights, complemented by blue side skirt accents highlighting its EV credentials. In terms of dimensions, the sedan measures 4,450 mm in length, 1,760 mm in width, and 1,520 mm in height, riding on a 2,610 mm wheelbase—placing it squarely in the standard C-segment sedan bracket. The rear end is defined by a full-width LED taillight strip paired with an integrated ducktail bootlid spoiler that adds visual depth. The vehicle achieves an aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.28 Cd. Inside, the cabin mirrors the minimalist, tech-led layout of the e2, featuring a fully digital instrument cluster, a rotating floating infotainment touchscreen, and a rotary gear selector, with the steering wheel bearing the standard "BYD" badge instead of the Dynasty Series' Chinese character emblems.

Powertrain & Performance

The BYD e3 was offered in two output and range configurations. The standard output version is powered by a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor producing 70 kW (95 PS) and 180 Nm of torque, paired with a 35.2 kWh ternary lithium-ion battery pack to deliver an NEDC-rated range of 305 km. The higher-output variant ups performance to 100 kW (136 PS) and 180 Nm, paired with either a 47.3 kWh or 43.2 kWh battery pack for an NEDC range of 405 km (with the 2021 Chuxing Edition rated at 401 km on the CLTC cycle). Power is sent to the front wheels via a single-speed reduction gear transmission (FWD), though official top speed figures were not disclosed. The 2021 Chuxing Edition returns a rated power consumption of 11.4 kWh/100 km. Under DC fast charging, the battery can be replenished from 30% to 80% in 30 minutes.

Chassis & Handling

Underneath, the front-wheel-drive BYD e3 utilises a MacPherson strut independent front suspension and a torsion beam non-independent rear setup—a conventional and cost-effective layout widely adopted in this segment. Braking is handled by ventilated discs at the front and solid discs at the rear, supported by an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold. The steering utilizes an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system, with selectable drive modes comprising Sport, Eco, and Snow. It rides on 205/60 R16 tyres mounted on alloy wheels. Suspension tuning is geared primarily towards ride comfort, soaking up small road imperfections effectively, though the rear torsion beam can feel relatively unsettled over sharper potholes and uneven road surfaces.

Cabin & Equipment

The focal point of the interior is a 10.1-inch adaptive rotating touchscreen running BYD's DiLink 2.0 intelligent connected ecosystem, supporting GPS navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, connected services, OTA software updates, and voice command functionality. Higher-spec trims gain an 8.0-inch full digital instrument cluster. Shift-by-wire operation is managed via a sleek rotary dial gear selector. The seats are trimmed in synthetic leather, with the driver's seat benefiting from heating and ventilation functions (driver side only). Other key convenience features include automatic headlights with follow-me-home function, keyless entry with push-button start, remote engine start, a reverse camera, cruise control, rear parking sensors, Hill-Start Assist, and Auto Hold. Climate control remains a manual unit equipped with a built-in PM2.5 cabin air filter. Luggage capacity stands at a generous 560 litres, with the rear bench offering single-piece folding to accommodate bulkier items.

Safety & Driver Assistance

In terms of safety, the BYD e3 comes standard with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Traction Control (TCS), and Electronic Stability Control (ESP). Tyre pressure monitoring is limited to a basic warning alert. On the passive safety front, front side airbags and side curtain airbags are omitted. Driver assistance kit is modest, covering essential basics such as a reverse camera, rear parking sensors, and conventional cruise control; advanced Level 2 driver aids like Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) are not available, keeping the vehicle at Level 1 driver assistance capability.

Market Performance & Ownership Feedback

Since its market debut in 2019, the BYD e3 has seen service predominantly within the commercial e-hailing and fleet mobility sectors, with private retail uptake remaining modest. Sales statistics show that the e3 recorded 1,750 units in full-year 2025 sales, with cumulative deliveries reaching 814 units between January and April 2026—including 419 units in April 2026, placing it 139th in the overall sedan charts. Within the market, the e3 competed alongside offerings such as the BYD Qin PLUS EV and Chevrolet Menlo.

Owner reviews generally praise the e3 for its spacious cabin practicality and running-cost value, making it a viable workhorse for commercial e-hailing duties. However, consumer complaint records on 12365auto highlight recurring grievances, including drive motor gear noise with warranty claim disputes, bodywork corrosion, significant high-voltage traction battery power drain, rapid range degradation, and infotainment network pairing failures. The model registered a complaint-to-sales ratio of 49.1 per 10,000 units, ranking 24th among compact passenger cars.

In summary, the BYD e3 carved out a niche in the fleet and ride-hailing sectors as an affordable entry-point electric sedan built on proven e-Platform hardware. However, with rapid technological advancements and the arrival of newer, more sophisticated alternatives like the BYD Qin PLUS EV, the e3's value proposition in terms of tech equipment, driving range, and overall product competitiveness gradually eroded, culminating in its quiet retirement after 2021. For buyers seeking a low-cost electric runabout on the used or fleet market, the e3 retains practical appeal, though long-term build quality, reliability, and after-sales support remain key considerations.
